Generate obsessive reading habit

There is little point in reading fast unless you read a lot. Getting sucked into reading is simple and has to do with pleasure:

  1. Read the books that you enjoy reading.
  2. Enjoy the thought of reading the next book. Generate a list of stuff you would LOVE to read.
  3. Dive into reading for fun. Take a vacation from other activities if you can.

With time you will feel that reading is pleasure, and this is a very important step.

The problem for most of us is transitioning from reading for fun to having fun from reading what needs to be read.
There are several tricks that will work.

  • Schedule reading time. Just like you would schedule any other activity, reading is important for both your professional and your personal development. Schedule professional reading at work and personal reading at home. Try to schedule recurring times and try to read in the same environment to generate a habit.
  • Have  continuous interests.  Understand what captures your imagination, what you need to learn in order to progress, what reading generates a nice conversation piece with your peers. Try to read because you WANT to read and not because you need to read.
  • Outline a clear progress path. See how one book opens you for another, and how the full reading path opens you to new horizons and possibilities. Visualize your progress and how one milestone leads to another.
  • Be active. Be social. If you can practice what you read in your day-to-day life, do practice it. If you can discuss it on social media or with peers, do generate a conversation. If you can develop and modify your own theories based on what you read – do that.
  • Have fun! This the most important part of the process. If your reading plan has a meaning, and if it generates pleasure – you will have fun. Make sure that both meaning and pleasure elements are present when you read.
