Information diet

Information diet is a new idea that is challenging the way we consume information in post-PC society. For example this article claims 7 secrets of limiting distraction and becoming more productive. Personally, while I disagree with this approach, I do recommend some caution with information intake.

Our brain was not designed to digest the information in the form it is readily available. Prolonged usage of Facebook can lead to depression.  Video game  addiction can have undesired effects on your brain.  TV brain damage is with us for so long, that we already forgot about it. Basically some information for our brain is like sugar for our bodies: we love it, but it is not good for us, especially if we get overly excited and addicted.

Does the same rule apply for reading? While there is some bad reading addiction, it is relatively very rare.  Simply taking Pomodoro breaks removes most of the addiction effects. Occasionally we get a book that is so exciting, that we cannot leave it, but most of the books we HAVE to read are not that exciting, they are as useful and boring as fruits and vegetables. They are healthy and they will make you better.

Good reading has many positive effects: good books make you smarter and calmer, improve your vocabulary and analytical thinking. What is more important: good reading improves brain connectivity and functionality. You can speedread without fear professional blogs, financial news, scientific publications, and basically anything larger than 4 paragraphs. For your own email, social networks,  messaging, etc – try to read and answer only during Pomodoro breaks.

Do try to listen to your mind and your body. Every person is slightly different. Your brain can handle as much information as you bring in,  but you may need to watch your consumption. If you forget to drink and to eat, suffer fatigue and depression,   if your day disappears and you do not understand what happened – these are clear signs that better routine can be made,
