Being a superlearner is a lifestyle choice. What does it really mean? Below are 8 aspects of what being a superlearner is all about.
- Search for wisdom. The ultimate goal of superlearner is probably search for wisdom. There is a story that king Solomon got to choose his blessing. While he could choose power or wealth, he asked for ability to distinguish right from wrong. Once he got wisdom, money and power quickly followed. We define wisdom as the ability to apply knowledge for benefit of ourselves and others. Wisdom is hard to define and to find, so while our quest is for wisdom, we usually find knowledge knowledge.
- Collect knowledge. We collect knowledge in various forms hoping we will gain wisdom. Information is everywhere around us. Knowledge is the ability to see the patterns in which various pieces of information collect to each other and manipulate them effectively. Knowledge is a common currency in our society. We get paid for professional knowledge. We make friends using knowledge and empathy. We have fun using mixture of knowledge and humour. Creativity is an ability to manipulate knowledge, and analysis is ability to clarify knowledge. We read books, watch TED and read blogs. Knowledge is a basic need of our time, just like energy and transport.
- Be effective. While many people try to look busy, be important or make friends, we focus on being effective. This means we define reasonable goals and work to reach them. We do not waste effort and we do not procrastinate. We are productive and creative, and we have fun, because we know it gets us closer to our goals. Usually one or two goals do not allow enough flexibility, so to be truly effective we define systems of values and priorities.
- Quantify everything. To be truly effective we must be able to measure time, effort and scope of whatever we are doing. If there is no way to measure it, how can we set goals and monitor progress? The act of measuring requires some effort and organisational skills, but the return on investment is huge.
- Acquire new skillsets. Occasionally we find that we miss an important skillset to achieve our goals. We can probably get help from others. Alternatively we can develop the required skillset within ourselves. A superlearner will do both. We always develop new skillsets, but we also team up with others who have complementary control of skillsets. A good team is always stronger than each of its members, and a good team player is a versatile player.
- Balance work and rest. With so much going on it is very easy to be sucked into work. But this will increase stress, reduce effectiveness and lead to burnout. By combining various worlds of interest, using humour and searching for meaningful relationships we build up resilience required to stay sharp and effective during a long and productive professional life.
- Open to the world. It is important to have many interest, to travel the world and open up to new experiences and people. Not only this is fun, but it also boosts up creativity and motivation. Being open to the world around us we are also getting wiser.
- Stay in shape.Physical and ethical well-being are very important. While they are not the focus of our existence, any problem with our health or ethics has debilitating effect. We do what needs to be done to stay in shape. This is sort of basis of pyramid and we want it to be solid.
Being a superlearner is a lifestyle choice. We need to search for wisdom and stay effective. We may find happiness along the way, but we do not search for the happiness itself. Be truely believe that once we get wiser, other benefits will follow,
Great star post Levi.
